The Buckhannon River is a tributary of the Tygart River. It is formed in Upshur County at the community of Alexander by the confluence of the Left Fork Buckhannon River and the Right Fork Buckhannon River both of which rise in southwestern Randolph County and flow generally northward. From there the Buckhannon flows generally northward in a meandering course to the city of Buckhannon, then turns northeastwardly into southwestern Barbour County, where it joins the Tygart Valley River near the community of Carrollton.
The river is known best for muskies.
