MUSKY FISHIN TIPS
1. Lure selection very key to catching musky. You want to have a wide range of lures that cover the different water depths. You can successfully fish for musky with 6-8 different lures. I know that musky lures are expensive and sometimes hard to find.
2. Vision plays a major role in fishin for these illusive fish. You want to have a good pair of quality polarized glasses that fit comfortably. Musky are territorial if you see one he will be close to that spot later in the evening or the next day. Take note of where you see a musky and fish it again later. Check out the DNR fishin report updated weekly for the water you will be fishin. Also listen to any locals or other fishermen that may have seen where musky have been seen. If you see a musky follow your lure to the boat without a strike do what is called the figure 8. Put your rod tip down in the water and move your lure in a figure 8 until fish attacks or moves on. This method does work but not all the time.
3. Lure presentation is fast and erratic. Try to mimic something escaping or dying. When reeling in you want to add a few jerks to the rod tip and an occasional pause possibly to trigger a strike.
4. Steel leader is a must about 12-18 inches. And use 20 lb. Test or greater. Also make sure your drag is set properly.
5. What types of habitat to look for. You want to fish areas that have access to shallow water as well as nearby deeper drops. Also key is look for rocks and vegetation together this is one of the muskies favored hang outs.
6. Net. I cannot emphasize enough how important this is to landing these big fish.
